Onkar to partake in St Oswald’s Transylvanian Challenge 2010
In June 2010, travelled to Romania to take part in the St Oswald’s Transylvanian Challenge. The Challenge included hiking in the Transylvanian Alps, biking through the villages of Transylvania and volunteering at a Romanian Hospice. Quite fitting for a dentist to go to the birth-place of the guy with the most famous teeth – Dracula!
By taking part in this unique challenge, I helped to raise vital funds for St Oswald’s Hospice. I took equipment and things like toothbrushes, toothpastes, scrubs etc…as much as I could. I provided dental care to the residents of the Casa Sperantei hospice, which is run by the hospice charity; Hospices of Hope.
My aim was to raise as much money as I could for St Oswald’s. Through the combined efforts of my fellow participants taking part in the Challenge, we raised over £30,000 that will help ensure St Oswald’s can continue to offer its vital care services.
St Oswald’s provides hospice care to adults and children from across the North East. They care for adults with life limiting conditions such as Cancer and Motor Neurone Disease ensuring that the time they have is quality time to spend with family, friends and loved ones.
They also offer specialist short breaks to North East children with progressive, life shortening conditions. They provide specialist care for children, as well as support and advice for parents, within a relaxed, home-from-home environment. Their aim is to make each child feel special.
St Oswald’s make no charge for any of their services; ensuring hospice care is available to everyone. They are a registered charity and their annual running costs exceed £7 million – of which £5 million must be raised through voluntary giving. This is why my sponsorship is so important.
